Iron and chromium are combined to form the alloy ferro chrome. It is created by melting a combination of carbonaceous, iron, and chromite ore in an electric arc furnace. While the carbon concentration of ferro chrome is normally low (between 0.1% and 10%, depending on the grade), the chromium content can range from 50% to 70%.

Ferro Chrome's primary characteristics and uses include:

1. Ferro chrome is primarily utilised as an alloying agent in the manufacture of specialty steels such as stainless steel. The final steel product has improved corrosion resistance, hardness, and strength thanks to the inclusion of ferro chrome.

2. Corrosion resistance: Chromium, which is present in ferro chrome, helps to produce a protective oxide coating on the surface of steel, giving it superior corrosion and oxidation resistance.

3. Ferro Chrome enhances steel's high-temperature strength and heat resistance, making it appropriate for use in high-temperature applications including gas turbines, power plants, and furnace components.

4. Wear resistance: The alloy is useful for applications requiring endurance and resistance to abrasion, such as cutting tools, dies, and wear-resistant parts, due to its hardness and wear resistance.

5. Due to its high melting point and resilience to thermal stress, ferro chrome is utilised in refractory applications. For use in hot conditions, it can be integrated into castables and refractory bricks.

6. The manufacturing of additional chrome-based alloys, such as low carbon Ferro Chrome and high carbon Ferro Chrome, requires both chromium and iron, which is provided by ferro chrome, an important commodity in the ferroalloy industry.
